INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS
Dr. Donna Andrews and Dr. Joel Reiter developed the Andrews/Reiter treatment method for epilepsy over the past 35 years. Using the A/R approach, they have helped over 2600 patients gain better control of their seizures and improve their lives. We are pleased that Oxford University Press has published the Workbook for the A/R approach, making this treatment available to you. Here are our suggestions on how to obtain treatment close to where you live.
The Andrews/Reiter approach will help you the most if you enlist a seizure counselor to guide you through the sessions in Taking Control of Your Seizures: Workbook.
We recommend you proceed as follows:
- Purchase a copy of Taking Control of Your Seizures: Workbook. See side tab on this website: NEW BOOK.
- Ask your primary doctor or neurologist to recommend experienced counselors close to where you live. You may also wish to ask family members or friends for referral suggestions.
- Schedule an appointment to talk with a recommended counselor. Bring your copy of Taking Control of Your Seizures: Workbook to the appointment. Show the Workbook to the counselor and ask if he or she would be able to guide you through the weekly Workbook sessions. The counselor may ask to borrow your copy before answering this question. It is best if you feel comfortable talking with the counselor; if not, you may want to interview another counselor before deciding about the best person to work with.
- Once the counselor commits to guiding you through treatment, your counselor will obtain his or her own copy of the Workbook. Each week, you will read a session and complete assignments in your own copy of the Workbook.
- Set up weekly appointments with your seizure counselor to work through the sessions detailed in Taking Control of Your Seizures: Workbook .
- The Andrews/Reiter Epilepsy Research Program offers consultations for your seizure counselor to help him or her with your treatment if special questions arise. Counselors can find information about these consultations under the side tab on this website: COUNSELOR TRAINING.
Dr. Joel Reiter retired from Andrews/Reiter Epilepsy Research Program, Inc. on August 1, 2018. Dr. Rosa Michaelis has taken over all aspects of Dr. Reiter’s work with the Andrews/Reiter Epilepsy Research Program, Inc.
