Dr. Joel Reiter is a graduate of Harvard University, New York University School of Medicine and University of California, San Francisco. Following his residency in neurology at UCSF he served as a Major in the US Army Medical Corp. After establishing a neurological practice in Santa Rosa, California he became interested in exploring the role of behavioral techniques in improving patients’ abilities to control their complex partial seizures. While teaching neurophysiology at the Biofeedback Institute in Berkeley he met Donna Andrews who had developed techniques for controlling her own epilepsy. They formulated a pilot project in 1981 with 6 of his patients who had uncontrolled epilepsy to determine the efficacy of behavioral techniques. The results were astoundingly good and led to the formation of the Andrews/Reiter Epilepsy Research Program, which was incorporated as a non-profit in 1983. Drs. Reiter and Andrews authored a comprehensive workbook using these techniques in 1987. Dr. Reiter co-authored, with Adrienne Richard, the seminal self-help book Epilepsy: A New Approach for people with epilepsy in 1991, which was revised as a paperback edition in 1995.

The Andrews/Reiter approach to management of epilepsy has been presented at major conferences in Glasgow, Vancouver, Calgary, Prague and New York. Dr. Reiter has presented papers at the San Francisco Neurological Society and Stanford Medical School. He teaches at the Santa Rosa campus of University of California, San Franciso Medical School.
